Hi all, I'm giving fishing a crack and so far I really enjoy it. Living in the eastern suburbs of Sydney I bought a rock fishing kit but it's a steep learning curve.

Anyway to question, I was fishing north of Maroubra but all the other fishermen were using a rig with a float and light.

What is this rig?
What are they fishing for?

Hey Chris, welcome to the forums mate. Sounds like they were fishing for tailor and salmon. You'll encounter a few guys fishing North Maroubra as well as the cliff there. Its a good spot for tailor, salmon with the odd snapper mixed in too.

The rig is normally set up as the following:
Float stopper
Float with light
Sinker
Swivel
Leader
Hook

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "Rock fishing kit"?

As for the rig that you saw. If they are ISO rigs.
The floats would probably be LED one's. They help to be more visible in low light/dark.
As for targets, it could virtually be anything depending on the rig and bait.

The kit is a 650 alvey and matching 11foot rod with 20lb mono.

You'll be best off to use a whole pilchard on a set of gang hooks for your set Chris.
